JANE CALLISTER (British 1963 – )

Born on the Isle of Man, UK (a small independent island between England and Ireland) Jane Callister received a BA (honors) from the Cheltenham School of Art, England in 1987, a Master’s from the University of Idaho in 1990 and a Master of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 1994.

Primarily known as a painter, she also works in a variety of other media to both expand the boundaries of, and the context for, her painting practice. Often she will incorporate sculpture and found objects into her wall painting and installation projects. Callister’s work is both playful and rigorous, insisting on bridging the gap between intellectual and popular pleasures, through a synthesis of the cerebral and physical aspects of art making.

Callister’s work has been exhibited extensively throughout the US in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Texas as well as Internationally, including the First Prague Biennial, Czech Republic in 2003, The Frankfurt Art fair (2001 & 2002); Jette Rudolf Gallery, Berlin; Anton Weller, Paris; Umea University, Sweden and at the Cell, London.

Callister is included in “Vitamin P: New Perspectives in Painting” a comprehensive, global anthology of contemporary painters published by Phaidon Press (2002) ; and “Abstract Painting: Techniques and Concepts” (2005) by Watson & Guptil. She is recognized as one of the top California artists along side Ed Ruscha, Paul McCarthy, and Raymond Pettibone in the book “LA Artland: Contemporary Art From Los Angeles”(2005) by Blackdog Press, London.
