phillip k smith III

( American 1972 – )

Along side artists Pae White, Jim Isermann, Jorge Pardo, and Karim Rashid, Phillip K Smith III explores and redefines the edges and intersections of fine art, architecture and design. Born in Los Angeles, Phillip received a Bachelor of Architecture and Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design. He continues to push the boundaries and confront the ideas of modernist design. Drawing inspiration from the cold rigidity of the Bauhaus movement and his personal passion for mid-century architecture, Smith III attempts to resolve the complex challenge of finding a natural state of life and spirit within these ideological aesthetic constrictions, the results are deceptively simple and compelling objects that seem to breath and move as you observe and interact with them. Already, an award winning designer, and an acclaimed architect, Phillip K Smith III has been commissioned to create over half a dozen monumental public art works, from California to Kansas City, in the last 3 years and was featured in the 2008 annual review in Art in America.
