So much of what makes up culture is the progression of human thought and understanding of the world around them and how it is processed through art, literature and therapy. Through my own process of recovery I have been given the opportunity to discover my own individual “culture” as I move through the process of rebuilding my capacity to take in and process, through my art, the world around me.

The theme “Revealing Culture” speaks to how my work represents a journey of discovery. First by creating forms in porcelain clay with the final caste in bronze I am expressing the universal symbol of humanity and the personal struggles that make up the lives of each individual human being.

Attached are examples of both the porcelain clay forms and the final bronze sculpture. The challenge is to make the work move similar to the way a figure moves while still keeping the work abstract. These images show how my forms push and pull, expand and contract, creating a tension that is meant to represent the tension present in the conscious mind and in the human body.

My work serves as a bridge between a horizontal and vertical plain. They can be installed from the floor to the wall or a pedestal to the wall. Because of the shifting in form being an integral part of the visual metaphor, I ask that the work viewed from 180 degrees.

Sculpting became of form of recovery as I worked with the clay I gained a better understanding of my own body’s recovery and how a “form” can evolve. Living with my disability has made it so that art and life and fully connected into how I choose to understand myself and the world around me – hence why the idea of “culture” is such a strong one for me.
