Phillip K Smith III ( American 1972 – )
Along side artists Pae White, Jim Isermann, Jorge Pardo, and Karim Rashid, Phillip K Smith III explores and redefines the edges and intersections of fine art, architecture and design. Born in Los Angeles, he received a Bachelor of Architecture and Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design. He continues to push the boundaries and confront the ideas of modernist design. He draws inspiration from the colors and growth patterns of native flora and fauna, finding equal motivation in the distillation of form, shape, and experience created by artists such as modernist, Constantin Brancusi, minimalist, Sol LeWitt, and the California Light and Space artist, James Turrell. Phillip K Smith III creates deceptively simple and compelling objects that seem to breath and move as you observe and interact with them. Phillip K Smith III has been commissioned to create over half a dozen public art works, from California to Kansas City, in the last 3 years and was featured in the 2008 annual review in Art in America. He was honored as the 2010 Artist in Residence at the Palm Springs Art Museum. Smith III is currently creating monumental works for installation in Arlington, VA; Walnut Creek, CA; Phoenix, AZ; Indian Wells, CA; and Oklahoma City, OK. All of these projects are scheduled be complete before fall 2012.
