Join Royale Projects at the Mónica Reyes Gallery in Strathcona to celebrate the launch of five Ken Lum works available on Saturday, July 24, 2023 from 12 - 3pm. The artist recently rediscovered original negatives and notes for a number of previously unrealized works from his acclaimed “Portrait-Repeated Text” series. This iconic series of works have been viewed the world over, catapulting Lum’s aesthetic and ideas into popular conciseness in the mid 1990s. The saturated-colour photographs of meticulously staged human scenarios are juxtaposed with bright minimal colour fields and bold contrasting text that narrate the image placed next to it. Using the strategies of advertising — this pairing creates a dramatic encounter for the viewer and shares wry but striking social commentary.
